Richard Schlagel’s essay entitled Meeting Hume’s Skeptical Challenge argues that part of  Hume’s skepticism is not relevant today. Schlagel claims that Hume’s skepticism was influenced by the limited scientific knowledge of Hume’s time.  In particular, Schlagel argues against Hume’s claim that humans have limited knowledge to that which is observed.  In this essay I will argue that Hume’ skepticism is relevant today, even with modern scientific knowledge. I will argue that Schlagel does not meet the skeptical challenge he proposes to do in his essay. I will defend my thesis using passages from Hume’s Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding as well as modern examples of scientific study. To begin I will outline Hume’s skepticism and introduce Schlagels objection.    (more…)
